Etymology
From Old Japanese 嘆く (nage2ku, “sigh; to lament; supplicate”) (cf. phonetic man'yōgana form 奈氣久 (MC nɑH kʰɨiH kɨuX)), verbalized from 嘆き (nage2ki1, “sighing; lament; supplication”), to be derived as a compound of 長 (naga, “long”) and 息 (iki1, “breath”).[1]
