Natural progression from Old Japanese 下二段活用 (shimo nidan katsuyō, lower bigrade conjugation) verbs ending in -u to modern Japanese 下一段活用 (shimo ichidan katsuyō, lower monograde conjugation) verbs ending in -eru.
