Etymology

Compound of 統合 (tōgō, comprehensive) + 失調 (shitchō, disharmony, imbalance, especially implying the loss of a previous harmony or balance) + (shō, disorder).

Coined in 2002 by the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology as a replacement for the older term 精神分裂病 (seishin bunretsu byō, literally mind/intellect split/break disease), due to confusion regarding the term and the diagnosis. See 精神分裂病 for more.
