Etymology
Compound of 統合 (tōgō, “comprehensive”) + 失調 (shitchō, “disharmony, imbalance”, especially implying the loss of a previous harmony or balance) + 症 (shō, “disorder”).
Coined in 2002 by the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology as a replacement for the older term 精神分裂病 (seishin bunretsu byō, literally “mind/intellect split/break disease”), due to confusion regarding the term and the diagnosis. See 精神分裂病 for more.
