Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 어엿브다 (eyesputa). Original meaning was “pitiful”. Compare the related 어여쁘다 (eoyeoppeuda, “pretty, lovely”) and 이쁘다 (ippeuda, “beautiful”).
