From Pali buddha (“awakened, enlightened”), Buddha (“the Buddha”), from Sanskrit बुद्ध (buddha, “awakened, enlightened”) past participle of बोधति (bodhati, “wake”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewdʰ- (“to be awake, aware”), whence also English bid and bede.
