From Middle High German twarc, probably from a West Slavic language (compare Polish twardy (“hard”), Czech tvrdý (“hard”), Russian твёрдый (tvjórdyj, “hard”)), from Old Church Slavonic тврьдъ (tvrĭdŭ, “firm”), from Proto-Slavic *tvьrdъ.
