Etymology
From German Quarz, from Middle High German (Central East German) quarz, twarc, from a West Slavic language [compare Polish twardy (“hard”), Czech tvrdý (“hard”), Russian твёрдый (tvjórdyj, “hard”)], from Old Church Slavonic тврьдъ (tvrĭdŭ, “firm”), from Proto-Slavic *tvьrdъ.
