From Pre-Germanic *pl̥h₂meh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *plh₂m-, *plh₂em- (palm of the hand)[1], from either Proto-Indo-European *plh₂- (to spread out)[2] or *pelh₂- (flat, broad). Cognate with Latin palma (palm), Old Irish lām (hand), Ancient Greek παλάμη (palámē, palm of the hand).
