From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱmoros (compare Sanskrit अश्मर (aśmará, “stony”)), a derivation from *h₂éḱmō (“stone”) (compare Sanskrit अश्मन् (aśman) 'stone'), from *h₂eḱ- (“sharp”).
