Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kert-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kert-, extension of *(s)ker-. Cognate with Latvian cìrst (“to hew, slash”), Lithuanian kir̃sti (“to hew, slash”), Old High German scrintan (“to split, burst”), Sanskrit कृन्तति (kṛntati, “to cut, split, break”).
