Etymology

Equivalent to e-grade of Proto-Slavic *kuti (to forge, to hew) or *kujati (to crook, to caw) + *-kъ, at least partially of onomatopoeic origin. Per Snoj, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kew- (to caw, to howl), akin to Lithuanian kaũkti (to howl), Latvian kàukt (to yell, to howl), Proto-Germanic *hūwilōną (to howl).
