Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Probably, an expressive e-grade verb from *kuti (to hew) + *-kati, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kewh₂- (to hew).

Alternatively, Snoj proposes an onomatopoeic origin, shared with Proto-Slavic *čavьka (jackdaw), Proto-Slavic *sova (owl (Strigiformes)), and Proto-Slavic *skovykъ (little owl (Athene noctua)), cognate to Lithuanian kaũkti (to howl), Latvian kàukt (to yell, to howl), Proto-Germanic *hūwilōną (to howl), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kew-.
