Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *sḱer- (Pokorny, Vasmer).
Compare Lithuanian sar̃ni, Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬀 (sairiia), Persian سرگین (sargīn), Sanskrit शर्धते (śárdhate), अवशर्धयति (avaśardhayati), possibly Ancient Greek σκῶρ (skôr), Proto-Germanic *skarną (“manure”) (whence Icelandic skarn).
