Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Distorted by folk etymology – descendants distorted it further; there are many regional variants not of all of which are listed in the descendant table below. Explanations:
- by surface *syrъ + *-ovъ + *-atъ + *-ka
- from Proto-Indo-European *ser- (“related to binding”) and thus cognate to Latin serum (“whey”) and Ancient Greek ὁρός (horós, “whey”)
- *syrъ + *voda
- borrowed from Turkic *jograt, variant of *jogurt, in Yakut суорат (suorat), suffixed with + *-ka after borrowing.

* -asъ is the expected Balto-Slavic form but is found only in some Old Czech documents; -axъ is found everywhere else and is formed by analogy with other locative plurals in -xъ.
** The second form occurs in languages that contract early across /j/ (e.g. Czech), while the first form occurs in languages that do not (e.g. Russian).
