From Middle English Wales, from Old English Wēalas, plural of wealh (foreigner, Welshman), from Proto-Germanic *walhaz (foreigner), probably from Latin Volcae, the name of a Celtic tribe in Gaul. Compare the second element in Cornwall, and also Gaul.
