Borrowed from Arabic بَاذِنْجَان (bāḏinjān), from Persian بادنجان (bâdenjân), from Sanskrit भण्टाकी (bhaṇṭākī, “aubergine”). Sanskrit word is likely of Dravidian origin. Compare Galician berinxela, berenxena and Spanish berenjena.
