Borrowed from Serbo-Croatian delija (“brave man; hero, soldier; Turkish bodyguard”), from Ottoman Turkish دلــی (deli, “mad, insane; the grand vizier's Bosnian or Albanian bodyguard”). Modern Turkish spelling is deli.[1]
