From Proto-Celtic *dworestus, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰwer- (“gate, door”). Cognates include Sanskrit द्वार् (dvār), Ancient Greek θύρα (thúra), Latin foris, forum, Old Church Slavonic двьри (dvĭri) and Old English duru and dor (English door).
