From Proto-Balto-Slavic, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰur, zero-grade of *dʰwer-, *dʰwor- (“door, gate”). Balto-Slavic cognates include Latvian dùrvis and duris, Old Church Slavonic двьри (dvĭri). Other Indo-European cognates include Latin foris, Sanskrit द्वार् (dvā́r), Ancient Greek θύρα (thúra) and Old English duru (English door).
