frikë
Albanian
Alternative forms
- frîgë
Etymology
Zero−grade form of Proto-Albanian *(s)pṛkeH2, from Proto-Indo-European *per- (“to attempt, try, research, risk”). Close to Latin perīculum (“danger, risk, trial”), Ancient Greek πεῖρα (peîra, “trial, attempt”), Old English fǣr. Assumption of a loan from Byzantine Greek φρίκη (phríkē) seems not plausible, because velar followed by front vowel would be palatalized. Compare also Romanian frică (“fear, fright”), Aromanian fricã (“fear, fright”).
