- gwneuthur
Etymology
Back-formation from gwneuthur, from Middle Welsh gwneuthur, altered from *gwreithur with -n- from gwnio (“to sew”), from Proto-Celtic *wregeti (compare Cornish gwra (“he does, makes”), Breton gra (“he does, makes”), Old Irish fairged (“they made”)), from Proto-Indo-European *werǵ- (compare English work). Middle Welsh preserved the -r- in the preterite: gwreith (“I did, made”), goruc (“he did, made”).
