From Old Spanish ostal, hostal, borrowed from Old Occitan ostal[1], from Late Latin hospitālis, hospitāle (“shelter, hospice, guesthouse”), from Latin hospitālis (“of a host or guest; hospitable”), from hospes (“host, guest”). Doublet of hospital and hotel.
