From Proto-Slavic *kamy, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *akmō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱmō. Cognates include Latvian akmens, Lithuanian akmuo, Ancient Greek ἄκμων (ákmōn, “anvil, pestle, battering ram”) and Sanskrit अश्मन् (aśman, “stone, hammer, thunderbolt”).
