From Proto-Germanic *managaz, from Indo-European. Cognate with Old Frisian manich (West Frisian mannich), Old Saxon manag (Low German männich), Middle Dutch mēnich (Dutch menig), Old High German manag (German manch), Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌲𐍃 (manags). The Proto-Indo-European root is also the source of Russian многий, Old Irish menic (Scottish Gaelic minig).
