From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *paŋ- (compare Malay peng-).
Prefix
pang-
- Used to form nouns indicating instruments or actions from verbs prefixed with mang-.
- pang- + lampaso (“scrub the floor”) = panlampaso (“floor scrub”)
Usage notes
- Where used to form an action noun, the first syllable of the root are duplicated
- (Before l, m, n, ng, ny, r, w and y) pang- becomes pa-, with some exceptions
- (Before b) pang- becomes pam-
- (Before b in some loanwords) pang- becomes pam-, with the removal of the b.
- (Before p) pang- becomes pam-, with the removal of the p.
- (Before t) pang- becomes pan-, with the removal of the t.
- (Before d) pang- becomes pan-, with the removal of the d.
- (Before g and h) pang- remains pang-
- (Before k) pang- remains pang-, with the removal of the k.
- (Before s) pang- becomes pan-, with the removal of the 's', with a few exceptions.
