From Proto-Germanic *sarwō, from Proto-Indo-European *serw- (“to guard”) or *ser- (“to bind together”). Cognate with Gothic 𐍃𐌰𐍂𐍅𐌰 (sarwa, “weapons, armour”), Old English searu (“gear, armour”), Old Norse sörvi (“sword”).
