Just follow these 6 easy steps.
Steps
-
1Take a medium-sized apple, and peel it. Crisp apples such as Granny Smith or Gala Empire are best but soft ones work fine.
-
2Take a small knife, it can be plastic or real, and form a nose, eyebrows, mouth and eyes. Optional - add some little cuts and dents all over the 'flesh' of the doll.Advertisement
-
3Once the apple looks like the face you intended, stop.
-
4Dissolve 15cc (1 Tbsp.) salt in 300 milliliters (10.1 fl oz) lemon juice (~1 cup)
-
5Soak the apple in the lemon juice for half an hour.
-
6Get it started drying in a 100 ^F oven for an hour or two. Put parchment paper under the apple, and turning it a few times, will help prevent a soppy underside.
-
7Leave the apple to dry out for several days. It will be drier than wet to touch, and rubbery to pressure. Once it is dried out enough, it should look like the face of an old woman.
-
8Create a body out of a rag. Drive a skewer up through the stem axis and introduce a doubled-over pipe cleaner or small dowel to support the apple's weight.
-
9Add limbs (twisted pipe cleaners), hair, clothing, and accessories such as a hat, broomstick, tiny iPod, etc.
-
10Voila! You've made an apple doll!

Community Q&A
-
QuestionWould the apple rot?Community AnswerWe have an apple head doll that we made for over 6 years ago and it hasn't rotted.
-
QuestionDo I need to peel the apple when making the doll?Community AnswerYes, please do so. That is the only way you're going to be able to get the texture and color and the dryness.
-
QuestionI recall using something to preserve the apple by taking out the core and putting sulfur inside after soaking it in salt water solution. Is that right?Community AnswerNo. There are no preservatives you have to use. The lemon and salt soak will be sufficient enough, and then of course the drying out process.
