Catholics base our devotion to God's mother on scripture. At the wedding feast at Cana, Our Lord says explicitly that He does not need to begin His ministry of preaching and miracles yet, but He does so, because she asked Him for help on behalf of another. She then tells the servants (and what are we if not servants?), "Do whatever HE tells you," and those are the last words she ever speaks in scripture.
