Kokořín

Kokořín is a municipality and village in Mělník District in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 400 inhabitants. Kokořín is known for the Kokořín Castle.

Geography

Kokořín is located about 10 kilometres (6 mi) northeast of Mělník and 35 km (22 mi) north of Prague. It lies in the Ralsko Uplands. The highest point is the hill Spálený vrch at 375 m (1,230 ft) above sea level. The entire municipal territory lies in the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area.

History

The first written mention of Kokořín is from 1320.[2]

Sights

Kokořín Castle

The main landmark is the Kokořín Castle. It was originally a medieval fortress carved in the local sandstone. In the mid-14th century, it was rebuilt into the castle. Today it is open to the public and offers guided tours.[2]

Kokořín Chateau is a small rural Baroque castle from the mid-18th century.[3]
