OMG (NewJeans song)

"OMG" is a song by South Korean girl group NewJeans, taken from their single album of the same name. ADOR, an independent division of Hybe Corporation, released "OMG" for download and streaming on January 2, 2023. Park Jin-su produced the track and composed it with Ylva Dimberg and David Dawood. Written by Dimberg, Gigi, and NewJeans member Hanni, the lyrics are about romantic obsession. An incorporation of R&B, hip hop, and pop, "OMG" features hip-hop percussion, trap rhythms, and a UK garage-inflected groove. It features plucked, staccato synth chords, skittering cowbells, and layered vocal harmonies and percussion. The music video depicts the members with different mental illusions.

Upon release, music critics complimented the production as fresh and catchy. Buoyed by its viral success on the video-sharing platform TikTok, "OMG" peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Global 200, number seven on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, and number two on the South Korean Circle Digital Chart. It peaked at number one in Singapore and on Billboard's Hits of the World charts for South Kora, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) certified "OMG" platinum for exceeding 100 million streams.

Background and release

"OMG" came five months after NewJeans released their commercially successful first extended play, New Jeans, and the three lead singles, "Cookie", "Attention" and "Hype Boy".[1] On November 10, 2022, during Hybe Corporation's annual community press conference on YouTube, CEO Jiwon Park announced that NewJeans will have a comeback on January 2, 2023, with their first single album, OMG.[2]

Following the announcement of the release, on November 10, 2022, it was revealed that the single album would include the eponymous title track, as well as a pre-release single, which would be released on December 19, 2022. The first teasers for the album were released on December 12.[3] As scheduled, NewJeans released the music video for "OMG" which was directed by Shin Woo-seok and the single was released through several music portals including iTunes and Melon.[4]

Music and lyrics

"OMG" has lyrics in Korean and English that were written by group member Hanni, Gigi, and Ylva Dimberg. Dimberg also composed the track with David Dawood and producer Park Jin-su.[5] The song is about a blossoming young love; the narrator dedicates the song to somebody who is there for her love ("No I can never let him go/ I only think of you 24/ I'm a lucky girl I know, I know/ Before I met you/ Everything was pointless").[6] The narrator's friends ask her, "Who is he?"[7] In the refrain, member Hanni sings, "I was really hoping/ That he will come through", hinting at the disappointment and melancholy that the narrator experiences.[8] The members perform in both pop vocals and melodic rapping.[9]

"OMG" opens with plucked, staccato synth chords and progresses with skittering cowbells and anchoring percussion in the pre-chorus. The chorus features vocal chopping and the track concludes with layered percussion, vocal harmonies, and piano.[10] It mixes elements of club genres including hip hop, R&B, trap, and UK garage,[6] showcased through its hip-hop percussion,[9] trap rhythms, and UK garage-inflected groove.[10][11] Pitchfork's Joshua Minsoo Kim described "OMG" as a "soft, minimalist R&B" track,[8] while Beats Per Minute's JT Early described it as "bouncy synth-R&B".[12] Hankook Ilbo popular music journalist Ko Kyung-seok deemed it a "simple hip-hop R&B" track.[11] August Brown of the Los Angeles Times considered the song "Y2K-era pop/R&B",[13] whereas Rolling Stone deemed it a throwback to 1990s R&B with a "21st-century appeal" brought by the synths.[14]

Music video

The 6-minute music video for "OMG" was released on January 2, 2023, alongside the single album's release. Directed by Shin Woo-seok of Dolphiners, it depicts the group's members in a mental hospital, all with their own delusions: Hanni believes herself to be Siri, Minji believes that she is a doctor taking care of the other members, Hyein sees herself as a fairy tale character, Haerin believes that she's actually a cat, and Danielle is aware of them being NewJeans in real life, even pointing out that they're filming a music video. The video ends with a montage of the group's previous videos and performances, including a snippet of their "Attention" music video. The video also features cameos from actor Kim Joo-hun and former webtoon writer Lee Mal-nyeon.[15][16][17]

Critical reception

Writing for Pitchfork, Joshua Minsoo Kim described "OMG" as a "soft, minimalist R&B" track that "offers a sweet portrait of private longing".[8] NME's Rhian Daly called it "a fusion that brilliantly matches the song's subject matter: the moment before you confess your feelings for someone and find out if they feel the same".[18] Rolling Stone and the Los Angeles Times included "OMG" in their lists of the Best Songs of 2023 So Far, both published in June.[14][13]

Commercial performance

"OMG" was met with viral success on the video-sharing platform TikTok.[19][20]
