Le qualificatif de « huitième merveille du monde » est parfois donné de manière non-officielle à de nouveaux bâtiments, des structures, des projets ou même à des concepts jugés comparables aux Sept Merveilles du monde.

Dans les œuvres de fiction
- King Kong, un monstre de film géant fictif ressemblant à un gorille colossal, qui est apparu dans plusieurs films depuis 1933. Son ravisseur fait la promotion des expositions publiques du Kong en cage avec le slogan : « Huitième merveille du monde »[57].
- De même, Gorgo, une créature fictive de 65 pieds de haut ressemblant à un dinosaure capturée au large de l'île irlandaise fictive de Nara à partir du film kaiju britannique du même nom est promue comme la « huitième merveille du monde » lors de son exposition à un cirque à Londres[58].
