κοντός
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Both senses are cognates to κεντέω, -ῶ (kentéō, -ô, “prick”), κέντρον (kéntron, “centre”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱent- with grade κοντ‑ from κεντ‑.
- Hellenistic Koine sense short derived from the ancient sense κοντός (“pole”) which referred to shorter kinds of spears, poles, hence the sense shortness. Compare κοντοφόρος (kontophóros, “carrying a (short) pole”) in contrast to δορῠφόρος (doruphóros, “carrying a (long) spear”).[1]
Not related to ἀκόντιον (akóntion, “javelin”).
