From กัมพูชา (gam-puu-chaa, “Cambodia”, literally “Kambu's descendant”) + อธิบดี (à-tí-bɔɔ-dii, “chief; lord; master”, literally “high lord; overlord”); literally "descendants of Overlord Kambu". Compare Modern Khmer កម្ពុជាធិបតី (kɑɑmpuciəthɨptəy).
