From Old Khmer taṃpal, taṃpol (“group of houses; hamlet; community”). Cognate with Modern Khmer តំបន់ (tâmbân).

ตำบล • (dtam-bon) (classifier ตำบล or แห่ง)

1. area; district; locality; place; region; spot; territory.
   • Numbers 11:3, KJV:

     เขาจึงเรียกชื่อตำบลนั้นว่าทาเบราห์เพราะไฟของพระเยโฮวาห์มาไหม้อยู่ท่ามกลางเขาทั้งหลาย

     kǎo jʉng rîiak chʉ̂ʉ dtam-bon nán wâa taa-bee-râa prɔ́ fai kɔ̌ɔng prá yee-hoo-waa maa mâi yùu tâam-glaang kǎo táng-lǎai

     And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.

2. (Thai government) subdistrict: administrative subdivision of อำเภอ (am-pəə, “district”), consisting of at least twenty บ้าน (bâan, “villages”) and governed by a public officer called กำนัน (gam-nan).
