Possibly from Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer jeñ (to meet; to join), or from aphaeresis of Middle Khmer ʼañjeñ (to address an earnest or urgent request to; to beseech; to invite; etc). Compare Middle Chinese (MC d͡ziᴇŋ, t͡sʰiᴇŋX, d͡ziᴇŋH, “to request”).
