From Proto-Tai *cɤɰᴬ (heart; breath). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨧᩲ, Lao ໃຈ (chai), ᦺᦈ (ṫsay), Tai Dam ꪻꪊ, Shan ၸႂ် (tsǎue), Tai Nüa ᥓᥬᥴ (tsaue1). Compare to Proto-Austronesian *qaCay.
