Etymology

“Head cover” of the Southern indigenous people (Shuowen); “scepter cover” (Zhouli); “hat” (Hanshu).

Wanderwort of Southeastern and Eastern Asia. The explanation in Shuowen alludes to a Southern origin, hence compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *muuk ~ muək (hat) (Khmer មួក (muək), Mon ဒမှော် (həmok, wide hat)), Thai หมวก (mùuak, hat, cap) and Lao ຫມວກ (mūak). On the other hand, this word is closely related to (mào, “to cover; hat”), Tibetan རྨོག (rmog, helmet) and Burmese အမောက် (a.mauk, crest (of hair); comb), for which Starostin posits Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mōk (hat), a derivative of *mō(s) (to cover).

Cognate with (móu, “metal cap; helmet”).
