Etymology
Schuessler (2007) minimally reconstructs the Old Chinese as *wînʔ and suggests a derivation from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *lwi(j) (“flow; stream”), just like 水 (OC lhuiʔ) (minimally reconstructed); early liquids *l- or *r- often disappeared before glides *j- or *w- in Middle Chinese.
