- The "mist" sense is never used in a meteorological sense, where it is referred to as 靄 (moya).
- Around the Heian period, spring mists were referred to as kasumi while in autumn they were called 霧 (kiri, literally “fog”); there was no distinction in both seasons in literature before that era as they were used interchangeably.
