First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 구룸 (Yale: kwulwum). From 구을— (gueul-), 굴— (gul-, “to roll”) (> modern 구르— (gureu-)) + —움 (um). Compare the derivation of Chinese 雲 (OC *ɢun, “cloud”).
