Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *ankul- (“belt”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enk- (“to turn, bend, flex, curve”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀγκύλη (ankúlē, “leather belt”), Lithuanian ánka (“sling, loop”).
