Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Possibly from *h₁oh₁ḱu-ptr, from *h₂eḱ-us (swift, fast) + the zero grade of *pter- (wing), whence Ancient Greek ὠκύπτερος (ōkúpteros, swift-winged (hawk or falcon)), Latin accipiter (hawk), and from the first word in the compound, Sanskrit आशु (āśu), Latin ocior and Ancient Greek ὠκύς (ōkús). Formed with the suffix found in other bird names, compare *golǫbь (pigeon).
