From a Vulgar Latin *suggluttiō or *subgluttiō, probably from an alteration of Latin singultō, from singultus. The (Vulgar) Latin was probably influenced by gluttiō. Compare Romanian sughița, sughiț, Sicilian sugghiuzzari, Spanish sollozar, Portuguese soluçar. Compare also Italian singhiozzare, from *singlutiāre, from singultāre, and also French sangloter.
