Baltic cognates include Lithuanian vèsti (to lead), Latvian vest (to lead), Old Prussian west, weddē, Lithuanian vẽdė, Latvian dial. vede. Further Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit वधू (vadhū, bride, young wife), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬜𐬎 (vaδu), Old Irish fedid (to go, bring), Avestan 𐬬𐬁𐬜𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (vāδaiieiti), possibly Albanian vjedh.
