This wikiHow teaches you how to build a Nether portal in console editions of Minecraft. You can build a Nether portal on both Xbox and PlayStation versions of Minecraft; the following instructions will even apply to the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft on the Xbox One.

Steps

  1. 1
Gather the necessary resources. In order to create a Nether portal, you will need the following items:[1]
    • 10 obsidian blocks — The portal frame's material. You can find obsidian anywhere in which lava comes into contact with water. Obsidian blocks must be mined with a diamond pickaxe, as any other pickaxe will cause the block to break without dropping anything.
    • 4 cobblestone (or filler) blocks — These will be used to shape the portal. You can use an alternative to cobblestone (e.g., dirt) if you like.
    • 1 flint and steel — Can be created by placing a flint and an iron ingot next to each other in the Crafting section of the inventory. You can create iron ingots by melting iron ore in a furnace.
  2. 2
Place a line of two obsidian blocks on the ground. These will form the bottom of your portal.

  3. 3
Place a cobblestone block at both ends of the line. This should leave you with a line of blocks that is four blocks long and one block wide.
  4. 4
Place a stack of three obsidian blocks on top of each cobblestone block. This will create two parallel, three-block-tall towers on top of the cobblestone placeholders.
  5. 5
Place a cobblestone block on top of each obsidian stack. You may need to use a scaffold (e.g., a tower made of dirt) to do this.
  6. 6
Bridge the distance between the two cobblestone blocks with obsidian. You'll use two obsidian blocks to do this. At this point, you should have a four-block-wide, five-block-tall rectangular portal, 10 blocks of which are obsidian.
  7. 7
Remove the cobblestone blocks. Using a pickaxe (or your bare hands), remove each of the four cobblestone placeholders. Your portal should now have two obsidian blocks on its top, two on its bottom, and three on either side.
  8. 8
Equip the flint and steel. In your equip bar at the bottom of the screen, scroll left or right (using the shoulder buttons) until you have the flint and steel equipped.
    • If the flint and steel isn't in your equip bar, press Y (Xbox) or Triangle (PlayStation), select the flint and steel, and move it into your equip bar from there.
  9. 9
Light one of the obsidian blocks. Stand next to any one of the obsidian blocks, then press the left trigger to apply the flint and steel to the block. This will light the portal; you should see a purple screen appear in the middle of the portal.
    • You may have to press the left trigger a few times to activate the portal.

Warnings

  • The Nether is incredibly dangerous. Only visit the Nether if you're well-equipped with strong armor, strong weapons, and plenty of cooked food.
