Facing an army of Enclave can be tough. Where can you get some heavy-duty backup? Why, in the dark confinements of Vault 87, of course.

Steps

  1. 1
Stock up on weapons and medical supplies. You will need precision guns, at least one heavy weapon, lots of Stimpacks, and heavy armor.
  2. 2
Travel to Little Lamplight. Enter Vault 87 through the caves (the vault door is too heavily irradiated to enter).

  3. 3
Kill the Super Mutants as you progress through. Rest when you can.
  4. 4
Go deeper into the vault. Feel free to loot as you clear out the Super Mutants.
  5. 5
Find the vault isolation lab. Fawkes will be in room 5.
  6. 6
Talk to Fawkes. He will ask you to set him free. Activate the fire alarm, or pick the lock on the door.
  7. 7
Talk to Fawkes again. He will offer to find you the G.E.C.K. Accept his offer.
  8. 8
Follow Fawkes deeper into the vault. Wait for him to enter the irradiated lab and retrieve the G.E.C.K.
  9. 9
Leave once you have the G.E.C.K. You will be ambushed by Enclave.
  10. 10
Break from containment. Speak to President Eden, then leave.
  11. 11
Exit out to Raven Rock. Fawkes will be waiting with a Gatling laser.
  12. 12
Fawkes will request to join your side. Accept him.

Yes. Fawkes has the highest health of any companion, and he can regenerate before taking enough damage to be in any danger.
  • Question
I have good karma and he didn't accept me as a companion once he grabbed the geck. What now?

Don't fret, Fawkes never joins immediately. He will only join your side after you leave the Enclave base.
