There's no telling when a craving for a thick, creamy malt will hit. Fortunately, all you need is ice cream, milk, and malted milk powder. Ingredients

  • 2 cups (296 g) of vanilla ice cream
  • 12 cup (120 ml) of milk
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons (14 to 21 g) of malted milk powder
  • 12 teaspoon (2.5 ml) of vanilla extract

Makes 1 to 2 malts

  • 2 cups (296 g) of chocolate ice cream
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) of chocolate syrup
  • 6 tablespoons (89 ml) of milk
  • 4 tablespoons (28 g) of malted milk powder

Makes 1 to 2 malts

  • 1 cup (150 g) of fresh or frozen strawberries
  • 3 tablespoons (21 g) of malted milk powder
  • 34 cup (180 ml) of milk
  • 3 scoops (444 g) of vanilla ice cream
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) of strawberry syrup, optional

Makes 2 malts

Method 1
Method 1 of 3:

Classic Vanilla Malts

  1. 1
Freeze a blender cup for 15 minutes. Put the metal blender cup or your blender's jar into the freezer and chill it for 15 minutes before you're ready to blend the vanilla malt.[1]
    • Chilling the blender cup or jar will help keep the malt thick and creamy.
  2. 2
Put the ice cream, milk, malt powder, and vanilla into the cup. Take the chilled blender cup or jar out of the freezer and scoop 2 cups (296 g) of vanilla ice cream into it. Add 12 cup (120 ml) of milk along with 2 tablespoons (14 g) of malted milk powder and 12 teaspoon (2.5 ml) of vanilla extract.[2]
    • Look for malted milk powder near the cocoa and chocolate mixes at your grocery store.
    • You can add an additional 1 tablespoon (7 g) of malted milk powder if you like a stronger malt flavor.

Variation: For an adult vanilla malt, add 1 to 2 fluid ounces (30 to 59 ml) of bourbon or rum.

  3. 3
Blend the vanilla malt for 30 to 60 seconds. Turn on the milkshake mixer or blender and combine the ingredients. Keep blending until the mixture is smooth and there are no lumps of ice cream.[3]
    • For a thick malt, stop blending as soon as the ingredients are mixed.
  4. 4
Serve the classic malt with whipped cream and a straw. Pour the vanilla malt into 1 or 2 serving glasses. For an extra creamy flavor, top the malts with whipped cream and garnish them with maraschino cherries.[4]
    • You can also drizzle a little syrup over the malts to add additional flavor. For example, drizzle caramel or chocolate sauce over the malts.

Method 2 of 3:

Double Chocolate Malts

  1. 1
Chill a blender cup for 15 minutes. Put the metal blender cup into the freezer about 15 minutes before you want to make the chocolate malts. The metal should be frosty to the touch.[5]
    • If you're not using a milkshake mixer, put your blender jar into the freezer.
    • If the blender cup is warm, the malt will begin to melt.
  2. 2
Put the ice cream, syrup, milk, and malt powder into the blender cup. Remove the cup from the freezer and scoop 2 cups (296 g) of chocolate ice cream into it. Add 4 tablespoons (28 g) of malted milk powder and pour in 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) of chocolate syrup along with 6 tablespoons (89 ml) of milk.[6]
    • For the creamiest chocolate malt, use high-quality chocolate ice cream that lists chocolate or cocoa powder as one of the first ingredients.
    • Although you can use any type of milk, whole milk will give you the richest tasting malt.

Variation: For a classic malt flavor, try a Black and White malted milk shake. Instead of using chocolate ice cream, use vanilla ice cream. This will give you a less-sweet, creamier tasting malt.

  3. 3
Blend the malt for 30 to 60 seconds. Turn on the milkshake mixer or blender and mix the ingredients until the ice cream is completely smooth. Keep in mind that the longer you blend the malt, the thinner the consistency will be.
    • If your blender has trouble mixing the malt ingredients, you might need to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender jar.
  4. 4
Pour the malt into serving glasses and drink them right away. If you'd like to garnish the double chocolate malts, spoon a little whipped cream on top. You can also crush a few chocolate malted candies, such as Whoppers or Maltesers, to sprinkle over the malts.[7]
    • For an even stronger chocolate flavor, drizzle the insides of the serving glasses with more chocolate syrup. Then pour the chocolate malt into them.

Method 3 of 3:

Fresh Strawberry Malts

  1. 1
Freeze a blender cup or jar for 15 minutes. To prevent the malt from melting as you blend it, chill the milkshake mixer cup or blender jar in the freezer for 15 minutes before you make the strawberry malt.[8]
    • While you can use the blender to make the malts, a milkshake mixer will incorporate more air into the malt. This will make the texture of the malts a little lighter.
  2. 2
Place the strawberries, ice cream, milk, and malt powder into the cup. Take the blender cup or jar from the freezer and put 1 cup (150 g) of fresh or frozen strawberries into it. Pour in 3 tablespoons (21 g) of malted milk powder and 34 cup (180 ml) of milk. Then add 3 scoops (444 g) of vanilla ice cream.[9]
    • There's no need to slice or thaw the strawberries since they'll be blended.

Tip: For extra strawberry flavor, add 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) of strawberry syrup and substitute strawberry ice cream for the vanilla ice cream.

  3. 3
Blend the strawberry malt for up to 1 minute. Turn on the milkshake mixer or blender and keep mixing until the strawberries are completely smooth. You shouldn't see any lumps of ice cream or strawberries once the malts are done.
    • If you'd like thinner malts, blend them for more than 1 minute.
  4. 4
Serve the strawberry malts with strawberry syrup. Pour the malt mixture into 2 serving glasses and spoon some whipped cream on top if you like. Drizzle a little strawberry syrup over the malts or garnish them with fresh strawberry halves.
