For recreational and competitive swimmers alike, rubber goggle straps can be a pain. They are hard to adjust and often pull on stray hairs. A simple solution is a bungee strap which can easily replace the rubber or silicone strap on almost any set of goggles. The bungee is great for kids because they can adjust it themselves (swim coaches will be grateful for this)! They are also durable and can be purchased at most sporting good or swim specialty stores, even online. Once in place, the bungee strap will create a secure, double strap that is easy to adjust and gentle on hair.

Steps

  1. 1
After purchasing your bungee strap, remove the cord lock by squeezing the button to the larger part of the lock and pulling the bungee out completely.
  2. 2
Remove the rubber or silicone strap that came with your goggles.

  3. 3
Loop one end of the bungee through a side adjuster from the back of the goggle threading towards the front.
  4. 4
If the side adjuster has two openings, loop the same end back through the same side adjuster but now threading towards the back. If there are three avoid the outermost opening as the bungee is typically thinner than the original strap and may slide through.
  5. 5
Repeat on the other side, again begin threading towards the front then towards the back.
  6. 6
Approximate the diameter of the continuous loop you have formed to match the head of the wearer.
  7. 7
Make sure both of the loose ends are even.
  8. 8
Place the lock cord back on by squeezing the button to the larger part and threading both looped ends through the hole that forms in the cord lock.
  9. 9
If desired trim ends of the bungee.

Bungees are pretty much the same throughout, but in my experience, Arena and Speedo goggles have been some of the best for competitive swimming.

Warnings

  • When trimming ends, leave approximately 2 inches so the bungee cannot slip out of the cord lock when adjusting.

  • Removing the old strap may take some patience, especially with older goggles as the rubber can stick within the side adjusters.
