Flies can be a pest around the house. If you have a budgie, teach it to catch flies!

Steps

  1. 1
Start training. Try a bead on a string. Sunflower seeds work well too. Just wave the bead/food around your budgie and they will try to catch it. When they do, give it a treat.
  2. 2
Practice. Don't expect the bird to catch a fly right away! Just try using food or the bead!

  3. 3
Introduce the fly. When your budgie starts getting good, get a dead fly. Don't give them a big one, give them one they can eat. A house fly would be ideal. .
  4. 4
Set them on a live fly. If their wings aren't clipped, that is a good thing as they will chase it around. If they have been clipped, they will just walk around chasing it.
  5. 5
Reward your budgie. When they made a catch, give them a treat. Seed works well, but they will eat the fly.

Community Q&A

  • Question
Why would someone need a bird to catch flies?

Probably just for fun. There are easier and quicker ways to catch flies, but some people might like the idea of training a bird to do it instead.
  • Question
I cannot take my budgie outside the cage, because I am afraid it might fly. Can I put a dead insect on its feeding place, so the bird can eat it automatically without taking out of the cage?

You could do that. You can take out the budgie if you don't let it escape your eyesight. Don't leave any door or windows open. If you are pretty sure that it will fly, just make sure you can catch it.
  • Question
What can I do if my budgie is scared of everything?

The best thing I do with my four budgies is to play and interact with them more and more to build their trust.

  • Don't let your budgie go in a sink to catch a fly. If they drove it in the water take it out for them, or if the waters shallow, let them go in (don't let them go in if there's dish soap in the sink. Same applies for giving them a fly if it went in the sink if it came out a sink with washing up liquid inside).
