A duvet cover helps to protect your duvet and keep it clean. It can also add some color to your space, as many duvet covers come in bright patterns and cool designs. You can put the duvet cover on the traditional way if you don’t mind flipping it inside out, or use the rolling method for a quick option. Make sure you take the duvet cover off and clean it regularly so it looks nice in your space. Keeping it clean will help you to maintain it for years to come.
Steps
Putting the Cover on the Traditional Way
-
1Turn the duvet cover inside out. Slide your hands inside the duvet cover and flip it so the inside is facing outward.
-
2Place the duvet flat on your mattress. Lay it down over your mattress so the corners are flat and loose. This will make it easier for you to put the cover on the duvet.[1]Advertisement
-
3Grab the top 2 corners of the duvet cover. Put your hands in the cover and locate the top 2 corners of the cover. Grip the corners in each hand.[2]
-
4Match the top 2 corners of the cover with the corners of the duvet. With your hands still in the cover, place the top 2 corners of the cover on the top 2 corners of the duvet. Hold the top 2 corners of the duvet tightly, keeping the cover over the duvet.[3]
- If there are ties on the cover, attach them to the loops on the duvet so it stays in place.
-
5Flip the duvet and the cover right side out. Keep your hands tight on the duvet cover and the duvet as you flip them. Shake and fluff the cover until it covers the top portion of the duvet.
- Once the top portion is covered, slide the duvet cover down towards the bottom of the duvet.
-
6Put the bottom 2 corners of the duvet inside the cover. Use your fingers to place the bottom 2 corners of the duvet inside the bottom 2 corners of the duvet cover. Make sure the corners match up, as this will make shaking and fluffing the duvet easier.
-
7Shake and fluff the duvet until it is covered. Hold the bottom 2 corners and shake the duvet until the cover sits snugly on the duvet.
- If there is a zipper or an enclosure on the bottom of the duvet, close it so the duvet cover is secure.
Rolling the Duvet Cover On
-
1Flip the duvet cover inside out and place it on your bed. Spread it so it covers your entire bed. Make sure the corners sit loose and flat. Keep the opening on the duvet cover away from you, towards 1 side of the bed.[4]
-
2Put your duvet on the top of the cover. Make sure the corners of the duvet line up with the corners on the duvet cover. If there are ties on the corners of the duvet cover, tie them to the loops on the duvet to secure it.[5]
-
3Roll the duvet and the duvet cover up. Stand on the opposite side of the opening on the duvet cover. Roll up the duvet cover and the duvet slowly towards the other side of the bed. Check that the edge of the duvet cover and the duvet line up as you roll them together.[6]
-
4Stuff the duvet roll inside the cover. Start with 1 end of the roll and continue stuffing it until it is completely inside the cover.[7]
-
5Close the duvet cover. Do up the zipper or the piece of velcro on the end of the duvet cover. Then, place it on your bed so the opening is lined up with the bottom of your bed.
-
6Unroll the duvet and shake it out. Pull the duvet cover apart from the duvet as you unroll it. Shake it out a few times so it lies smooth and flat on your bed. You should now have a duvet that is snugly in the cover.
Cleaning and Maintaining the Cover
-
1Spot clean any stains or marks. Dab the stain with a wet cloth to get it out. Spray stain remover on the stain or mark and dab it out with a cloth or a sponge. You can then wash the duvet or wait to wash it at the end of the month.
-
2Wash the cover with like fabrics and colors once a month. Avoid mixing the duvet cover in with other fabrics or materials, especially linen, silk, or rayon, as this can lead to pilling. Do not put the cover in with fabrics that are a different color, as you risk the color bleeding onto the cover. Wash the duvet cover with your sheets, if they are the same color, or on its own if you do not want to risk it getting damaged.
- If you tend to wash your bedsheets every week or 2 weeks, you may wash your duvet cover at the same time so your bed stays clean.
-
3Use mild laundry detergent and a cold setting. Pick a detergent that is ecological and made of natural ingredients. Make sure it is mild and made for washing delicate fabrics. Wash the cover at temperatures of 40 °F (4 °C) or lower, as hot water can damage the fabric.
- If your washing machine has a delicates or low speed setting, use it to wash your duvet cover.
- Do not use fabric softeners to wash the duvet cover, as they can break down the fabric.
- Avoid using bleach, as it can be too harsh on the cover.
-
4Hang the cover to dry overnight. This will ensure duvet is not exposed to high heat and the fabric stays soft.
- If you do want to use the dryer, dry the cover on a very low heat setting.
-
5Iron the cover if it is creased or wrinkled. Creases and wrinkles can look unsightly on your duvet cover when it lays on your bed. Use an iron on a low heat setting made for delicate fabrics to remove wrinkles and creases. Iron 1 side of the duvet and then flip it over to iron the other side.
- Make sure you remove wrinkles and creases at the corners and ends of the cover with the iron.
- Be careful when using an iron. Always hold it by the handle and rest it on a flat surface so you do not burn yourself.
